For living in Uruguay long term, no—English alone will not be enough. English can help in some places and with certain people, but everyday tasks are mostly handled in Spanish.
Renting accommodation, healthcare, government appointments, banking, school, deliveries, repairs, and conversations with neighbours require at least a basic understanding of Spanish. In Latin America, many people may speak English at a minimal level, but that is not enough to understand contract terms, a diagnosis, or an administrative response.
At the start, you can use phrase templates, a translation app, and the help of a Spanish-speaking person. But it is better to set a practical goal: learn to state your address yourself, explain the problem, and understand the date, amount, list of documents, and next step.
