Digital nomad in Uruguay

Foreigners who work remotely for a foreign company or clients outside Uruguay can apply for the Hoja de Identidad Provisoria nómada digital. This is a separate immigration route involving an online application, a declaration and the subsequent issuance of an identity document; entry, extension and transition to residencia requirements must be checked separately.

How the status works

This is a remote work permit, not a separate entry visa.

Before filing, it is important to separate three issues: legal entry, Hoja de Identidad Provisoria and further residencia.

Entry to Uruguay

The applicant must first enter the country legally. The need for an entry visa depends on nationality and passport type and should be checked against Uruguay’s visa rules before travel.

Hoja for digital nomads

The permit is intended for those who work remotely for a foreign company or independently with clients outside Uruguay. The initial period is six months.

Renewal or residencia

The permit can be extended for another six months if the DNM requirements are met. For longer stays, choose a suitable temporary or permanent residency and apply separately.

Documents

What to prepare for the first application and renewal

The first application is simpler than an extension, but in both cases the details and signature must match the identity document.

First application

The DNM requires a copy of the identity document with which the applicant entered or will enter Uruguay, as well as a signed declaration using the official form. Online submission requires a gub.uy account or another supported electronic identification method.

Extension

A valid Uruguayan identity document, a new declaration, confirmation of Uruguayan vaccination status and, for applicants over 18, national-level criminal-record certificates from countries where they have resided during the past five years for at least six months are required.

Procedure

From checking entry requirements to obtaining a Hoja de Identidad Provisoria

  1. Check entry requirements

Check whether you need a visa for your nationality and passport type, and enter Uruguay legally.

  2. Prepare the declaration

Fill out the official form and confirm that the work is done remotely and the funds are sufficient for living in the country.

  3. Submit the application

Log in to the DNM online service using a supported electronic identification method, fill in your details and attach the documents.

  4. Wait for the DNM decision

Monitor notifications and, if necessary, provide the requested information. The migration service decides on the application.

  5. Obtain an identity document

Once approved, contact the Dirección Nacional de Identificación Civil in accordance with the instructions received from the DNM.

Before moving.

Which issues are resolved separately

The Hoja de Identidad Provisoria confirms immigration status for a limited period of time, but does not replace the rest of the relocation plan.

  • Tax liability depends on the actual circumstances and is not determined solely by holding a digital nomad permit.

  • The terms of an employment or civil-law contract with a foreign company and clients must be checked separately.

  • Health care, insurance, housing and banking are not automatically included in the migration permit.

  • Family members do not receive status automatically: for each applicant, the appropriate procedure and their own set of documents must be checked.
