Planning childbirth in Uruguay involves several separate tasks: choosing a healthcare provider, registering the birth, obtaining the child's documents, and checking the parents' immigration pathway. A child's birth in the country determines the child's status under the Constitution, but does not replace the separate procedures required for the parents.
Three different routes
The child's status, the parents' residencia, and the parents' citizenship are handled separately.
The family needs a single plan, but each outcome has its own basis, authority, and set of documents.
Parents' residencia
A Uruguayan child creates a family bond recognized by the DNM as the basis for the permanent residencia category through vínculo uruguayo. This gives parents the right to apply, not an automatic decision: they must meet the requirements of the migration procedure.
Parents' citizenship
The birth of a child does not automatically make the parents citizens of Uruguay. Ciudadanía legal is considered by the Corte Electoral under its own constitutional criteria, including habitual residence and other evidence.

After birth
How to register a birth
The Registro de Estado Civil registers births; in Montevideo, an advance appointment is required to file within the deadline.

Obtain a certificado de nacido vivo
The medical certificate of live birth must be presented in the original and as a copy. A professional stamp is required for a private institution; the stated Registro Civil exemption applies to public hospitals.

Determine who must attend
For a child born to married parents, the father or mother usually attends; when the parents are not married, the Registro Civil requires both parents to be present. Both parents may be required for the chosen order of surnames.

Collect parental documents
Valid identity documents for the registrants and, if applicable, a marriage document are required.

Meet the deadline
Regular registration takes place within ten working days, counting from the day after birth; in rural areas, the deadline is twenty working days. The late registration procedure is then applied.

What documents parents need to prepare
DNM considers each parent's application separately and may request additional evidence depending on the circumstances of the case.

For applicants over 18: national-level criminal-record certificates from countries of residence over the past five years, where residence lasted at least six months.

What to take from the country of origin
