The hardest products to find are those that people are used to considering “ordinary” but that are not widely available in Uruguay. Examples include small cornichons, frozen black currants, certain types of wet pet food, and large mattresses more than 160 cm wide.
This does not mean that the country has “nothing.” Basic clothing, dishes, groceries, appliances, and household items are available locally. Difficulties more often arise when looking for exact equivalents, specialty products, uncommon sizes, therapeutic pet food, or familiar flavors.
Before moving, it makes sense to bring anything essential for your health, work, pet, or sleep, and to buy common items only after you have rented a home. This keeps your luggage from turning into a storehouse of random supplies.
