How to Travel Between Cities in Uruguay: Buses, Car and Ferries

Uruguay is easy to explore by land transport: buses run between major cities, highways link the coast, and international ferries cross the Río de la Plata. But the country's compact size does not mean that every destination is reachable without a change or takes the same amount of time.

It is best to plan the route around a specific date. Timetables, fares, stops and seasonal frequency change, so an old video gives an idea of how to travel but does not replace checking the ticket before departure.

The country's transport geography

Montevideo remains the main hub: many intercity services start, end or connect in the capital. For journeys along the eastern coast, the Maldonado–Punta del Este conurbation is important, while Colonia del Sacramento links land routes with the ferry to Argentina.

A journey between two small towns may require returning to a major hub. The distance on the map can be short while the public-transport route is long because of a change.

When planning, look not only at travel time but also at the arrival point. The terminal may be far from your accommodation, especially in a resort or rural area.

Intercity buses

A bus is the main option for a traveller without a car. There are more services on popular routes, but it is better to buy tickets in advance for weekends, holidays and high season. Frequency can be low on a regional route.

Before paying, check:

• the exact departure and arrival station;
• whether the service is direct;
• the duration of stops;
• baggage rules;
• whether refunds or exchanges are possible;
• the last available transport from the terminal to the accommodation.

If you buy a ticket with a connection, allow extra time. Two journeys with the same company do not always form a guaranteed connection.

Bus terminal and boarding

In Montevideo, intercity services use a major terminal, but you must check the departure point for the particular company on the ticket. Arrive early: finding the platform, baggage and the queue take time.

In a small town, the ‘terminal’ may be a compact station or a stop. Clarify exactly where the bus will be waiting and whether you need to print the ticket. Save the service number and the carrier's contacts.

Do not assume that the driver will stop anywhere along the highway. An intermediate boarding point must be specified by the carrier.

Journeys along the eastern coast

The Montevideo–Maldonado–Punta del Este corridor is popular with residents and visitors. Some services go to the Punta del Este terminal, while others serve Maldonado or continue further. The destination address determines which option is more convenient.

Piriápolis and small coastal areas may require a separate service or a change. In summer, demand is high; in winter, the frequency of some routes decreases.

When renting accommodation ‘near Punta del Este’, check the night bus. Several kilometres along the coast can become an expensive taxi journey after the last service.

The Montevideo–Colonia route

Colonia del Sacramento is conveniently reached by intercity bus or car. For a day trip, choose an early departure and book the return in advance. The historic centre is within walking distance of the transport terminals.

If the journey continues by ferry to Buenos Aires, allow time for international border controls. Do not schedule the bus and ferry with the minimum transfer time.

A car makes it possible to stop on the way, but fuel, toll sections and parking need to be taken into account.

Ferries across the Río de la Plata

The ferry links Uruguay and Argentina. Depending on the service, ferries depart from or arrive in Colonia or Montevideo. Price and duration depend on the date, operator, ticket class and whether a car is being carried.

This is an international journey, so immigration and customs formalities apply. Check documents, check-in time, baggage and rules for taking a car. The stated crossing duration is not the same as the total time from entering the terminal to leaving it in the city.

Changes are possible in bad weather. Do not schedule a non-refundable flight immediately after the ferry without an adequate margin.

Travelling by car

A car is convenient for rural areas, several stops and accommodation outside bus routes. Main highways allow faster travel, but some roads are tolled. Check payment points, payment methods and tariffs before the trip.

Include fuel, road charges, parking and insurance in the budget. For a foreign car, separately check the policy's territorial coverage and temporary import.

A navigation app may suggest an unpaved shortcut. Before leaving the main highway, assess the weather and surface condition. At dusk, account for animals on the road.

Does it make sense to rely on trains?

The absence of a metro in Montevideo and the limited role of passenger rail do not mean that the country has no railway infrastructure at all. But a tourist should not build an intercity itinerary expecting a European rail network.

For a particular date, check whether a suitable passenger service exists and where it departs from. Historic stations and tracks do not prove that a regular service operates today.

The practical basis for journeys between cities is the bus and car, with the ferry added for Argentina.

Urban transport in Montevideo

After an intercity arrival, the route continues by city bus, taxi or ride-hailing app. Montevideo has no metro, so surface transport in peak hours depends on traffic conditions.

Check the stop, direction and payment method in advance. One route number may have variants, so use the final destination as your guide. For a late arrival, keep a backup option for reaching the accommodation.

If you need to cross the city with baggage, a direct taxi can sometimes be more practical than several buses. Compare not only price, but also time and physical effort.

How to plan a route without unpleasant surprises

Start with the carrier's official timetable, then check the terminal and the final leg. Take a screenshot of the ticket and save the accommodation address offline. Allow extra time for a connection and for controls on an international route.

Recheck the service the day before departure. During the season, buy in advance, and for a trip to a small town clarify the return transport before setting off. Do not rely on a single journey-time estimate from a map.

Uruguay allows travel without your own car if the route runs between major hubs. A car becomes especially useful for several stops, rural areas and remote parts of the coast. The right choice is determined not by the prestige of the mode of transport, but by the exact address, date and what you want to see on the way.
