You can lawfully retrieve the originals, but only after they have been registered, that is, once Uruguayan-format certificates have been issued.

To obtain the originals from Registro Civil, you need to contact the Registro Civil notarial office on the mezzanine at Avenida Uruguay 933. You must book online using the QR-code link:

What must be provided in exchange

In exchange for the originals, notarised copies made by a local notary are provided.

This can be done either when first submitting applications to register the certificates with Registro Civil, by including them in the set of documents accompanying the application, or later, when it becomes necessary to retrieve the originals.

The originals will be returned to you, and you will be asked to sign the application to acknowledge receipt.

Important

Each adult may collect the originals of their own birth certificate, their minor children's birth certificates, and their marriage certificate. However, they may not collect their spouse's original certificate without a power of attorney.

For Russian citizens

For Russian citizens, there is always an alternative: request the certificate from the civil registry authorities through the Consulate.

To do this, book an appointment by email, complete two copies of the request stating that the document is needed with an apostille, and pay the state fee on the day the application is filed.

The waiting time is approximately four months.

You can apply for permanent residence in Uruguay yourself — our guide gives clear step-by-step instructions.

If you do not want to spend your time studying the application process and carrying it out, you can always use Anna Bamburova's services to complete the process comfortably and in the shortest possible time, receive a complete action plan for permanent residence and the ID card — cédula — and benefit from extensive experience of adapting to life in Uruguay.
