Is Uruguayan Citizenship Passed On to Children Born Abroad?

The answer depends on whether the parent is a natural/nacional uruguayo or a ciudadano legal.

Nationality and passport

Answer

The answer depends on whether the parent is natural/nacional uruguayo or ciudadano legal. For children of a person who obtained only ciudadanía legal after residing in Uruguay, automatic transfer of status to children born abroad does not work in the same way as it does through descent from a Uruguayan by birth. The child may need an independent basis and procedure.

For descendants of Uruguayan nationals, there are separate laws governing children and grandchildren born abroad, including the registration of foreign civil-status records. Therefore, the word “citizen” in everyday conversation is not enough to determine the child’s entitlement.

Before birth or a consular filing, show the carta de ciudadanía, the parent’s certificate, and the child’s record to the Uruguayan consulate. Obtain a written list, because apostille, translation, and registration vary by issuing country and generation of descent.
