Will there be any problems entering the Schengen Area with a Uruguayan passport?

Holders of ordinary Uruguayan passports can make short visa-free trips to the Schengen Area, provided they meet the general requirements.

Nationality and passport

Answer

Holders of regular Uruguayan passports may travel visa-free to the Schengen Area for short stays, subject to the general conditions. However, a legal citizen whose passport or status links them to the nationality of a third country should check the rules of the specific destination country: the EU previously expressly stated that requirements based on nationality of origin apply to such documents.

In 2025, Uruguay changed the passport format, then announced a return to the previous version and further work on a solution. Therefore, another person’s experience with a different document format cannot be treated as a guarantee. Check the information in the fields and machine-readable zone of your own passport.

Before buying a ticket, send a scan of the data page to the consulate of the country of first entry and obtain a written response regarding visa requirements. Also check your passport’s validity, insurance, return ticket, and upcoming ETIAS requirements on the official EU portal.
