After moving, financial life does not end with a debit card. Credit history, rental guarantees, mortgages, deposits, imports and major transactions enter the picture. Each tool has its own requirements, and an advertised rate rarely shows the full cost.
How financial history is built
Banks and other organisations assess income, length of employment, payments, debts and customer behaviour. A new resident often starts without a local history even if they had a high limit in another country.
The first steps are stable documented income, accounts with no overdue payments and careful use of available products. Do not take an unnecessary loan just for a score.
Credit card
Approval depends on the bank, income, length of relationship and documents. Conditions such as ‘after one year’ or ‘after two years’ are not universal. Ask the particular issuer for its criteria.
Compare the annual fee, interest, minimum payment, insurance and settlement currency. Pay the full balance if the card is used for convenience.
Consumer loan
Look not at the nominal rate but at the total cost: fees, VAT on services, insurance and penalties. Ask for a schedule showing the final amount before you sign.
Compare the bank's offer with paying from savings and with the seller's instalment plan. A low monthly payment can conceal a long term.
Mortgage
A mortgage is not necessarily unavailable to a foreigner, but the bank assesses status, local income, employment record, down payment and the property. Terms differ between state and private banks.
Obtain a preliminary assessment before looking for a home. Allow for escribano costs, valuation, insurance, taxes and registration: they are not included in the listing price.
Currency and indexed units
A loan may be denominated not only in pesos or dollars, but also in an indexed unit. Then the payment changes together with the index. Match the currency of the debt to the currency of your income.
Ask for a scenario showing payment growth. A mortgage affordable today must remain affordable if the exchange rate and index change.
Deposits
Compare currency, term, liquidity, rate, early withdrawal and guarantees. A high peso rate carries currency risk for someone who measures capital in dollars.
Clarify the tax treatment of interest and deposit protection. Do not tie up your reserve for a term during which you may need it.
Rental guarantee
Instead of a large deposit, a landlord may accept a bank, insurance or other guarantee. The provider checks income and charges a fee. Requirements differ between products.
Find out about the coverage, annual cost, renewal procedure and debt collection process. A guarantee protects the landlord and does not cancel the tenant's debt.
Major purchase
A car or property requires a transparent settlement and documents proving the source of funds. An escribano, bank, registries and tax authorities may participate in the transaction.
Do not transfer a substantial deposit without checking title and the refund conditions. Use the owner's account and a clear payment purpose.
The role of an escribano
An escribano checks documents and formalises legally significant transactions within their competence. Choose an independent professional rather than relying only on the seller's representative.
Before the transaction, request a written estimate of fees and taxes. It should distinguish government payments from the professional fee.
Bringing in cash
Rules and thresholds for declaring monetary instruments apply when crossing the border and must be checked before travel. Failing to declare creates a risk that funds will be detained.
Even cash brought in lawfully may not be accepted by a bank without evidence of its origin. A border declaration does not replace a source-of-funds dossier.
Importing personal belongings
Rules depend on status, type of goods, value, delivery and any relocation exemptions. Do not ship a container until a customs broker has checked the inventory.
For equipment, consider compatibility, warranty and delivery cost. Sometimes buying in Uruguay costs more but is safer in terms of service.
International parcels
Parcels are subject to limits, restrictions on the number of shipments, identification requirements and taxes. These parameters change, so old figures cannot be used.
Check Aduanas and carrier rules before ordering. Include delivery, broker, duty and possible storage in the cost.
Why imports are expensive
The price is not made up of duty alone. Classification, origin, VAT, charges and logistics all count. Mercosur membership may benefit goods of qualifying origin, but does not make every import cheap.
For a business, obtain a cost calculation based on the tariff code before paying the supplier. A classification error is more dangerous than a small difference in the purchase price.
Buying equipment
Compare the local price with the overseas price including delivery, taxes and warranty. For a laptop or phone, keyboard layout, charging, service and return options matter.
Do not plan to systematically circumvent commercial imports through personal parcels. Regularity and volume can change how the operation is assessed.
Financial reserve
A major purchase should not consume your reserve for rent, healthcare and a return journey. After the down payment, retain several months of mandatory expenses and a separate repair reserve.
If income is unstable, model the payment under a fall in income and a rise in the exchange rate of the debt currency.
Decision checklist
Determine the full price; check title and restrictions; obtain tariffs and the schedule; compare currencies; calculate taxes and professional fees; document the source of funds; keep a reserve.
For a loan, use bank documents; for imports, Aduanas; for taxes, DGI; and for social security matters, BPS. A major financial operation is safe when not only the attractive rate or price, but the entire chain of obligations has been checked.
