Carné de Salud is a document confirming completion of preventive medical screening. It may be required for work and certain administrative procedures. It is neither health insurance nor a full outpatient medical record.

The examinations, validity period and additional requirements depend on age, sex, health status and current rules. Before booking, check the list with an authorised medical centre.

Where Carné de Salud is required

An employer or authority may request a valid document as confirmation of a medical check. Confirm the exact name and acceptable type: different cards and certificates are not always interchangeable.

Do not obtain it ‘just in case’ many months in advance. It may expire before employment or an application.

If a particular procedure requires the document, keep the written instruction.

Who must undergo it

The requirement is determined by the activity and rules, not citizenship alone. A foreigner and an Uruguayan complete the prescribed check on the same basis.

Adapted examinations may apply to minors, pregnant people and people with particular health conditions. Tell the clinic in advance.

Do not apply the list for an adult man to a woman of another age or to a child.

Choosing a medical centre

Make sure the institution is authorised to issue the document that will be accepted. Ask about cost, appointments, turnaround time and what the price includes.

Check whether you can bring recent results from another clinic and in what format. Do not repeat a test unnecessarily.

Read reviews of the organisation, but confirm requirements with the organisation itself.

Preparing

Bring a passport or cédula, a photo if required, information on vaccinations, medicines and chronic conditions. Confirm whether fasting is necessary.

Do not stop medicines or change your regimen without a doctor. Note the names of active ingredients.

If you feel unwell, tell the clinic before testing: a temporary condition can affect the result.

Basic examination

The programme may include a consultation, blood pressure, height, weight and a general assessment. The doctor takes a history and determines which tests apply.

Answer honestly. The purpose is to identify risk and direct you to treatment, not to ‘pass a health exam’.

Ask for an explanation of any result you do not understand and the next steps.

Laboratory tests

The required tests depend on the regulations and the person’s profile. Do not use a fixed list from an old video. The clinic provides preparation instructions and testing times.

Check units and reference ranges. One abnormality is not a diagnosis and should be assessed by a doctor.

Keep a copy of results for follow-up, but provide an employer only with the document required.

Dental component

The programme may include a dental check. Confirm whether a separate certificate is needed and where to obtain it.

A problem found does not always mean the document will be refused. What matters is the prescribed process for treatment or confirmation.

Do not buy a fake clearance: it defeats the preventive purpose and creates a legal risk.

Additional examinations for women

Discussions mention Pap tests and mammograms for certain ages. Exact age ranges and how recent the results must be may change, so the clinic must determine what applies.

If a test was completed recently, bring the official result. Pregnancy or a contraindication requires an alternative medical procedure.

Confidential results remain with the patient and doctor to the extent provided for.

Age requirements

Preventive examinations may be added with age. Do not delay booking if separate specialists are needed to obtain the results.

A person younger than the stated range should not undergo a procedure merely because it was included in an acquaintance’s package.

Ask for the full cost of additional stages before paying.

Chronic illness

Bring a medical summary, a list of medicines and confirmation of follow-up. A diagnosis does not automatically make it impossible to receive Carné de Salud.

A doctor may request a specialist opinion or completion of treatment. Obtain the exact wording and deadline.

Do not conceal an illness to obtain a quick document: it can harm your health and work.

An abnormal test result

If there is an abnormality, the clinic explains whether a repeat test, consultation or treatment is required. Distinguish a temporary delay from a final refusal.

Obtain a written referral. Do not repeat a test at a random laboratory without confirmation that the result will be accepted.

After treatment, provide the document in the required format.

Validity period

The validity period depends on the category and medical circumstances. Read the date on your own document rather than relying on someone else’s one- or two-year term.

Set a reminder and start renewal early, especially if additional examinations are needed.

An expired Carné de Salud can affect work even if you feel healthy.

Renewal

Confirm whether the full set of examinations is repeated and whether fresh results can be used. Bring the previous card and treatment documents.

Do not wait until the final week. An appointment with a specialist can take time.

After renewal, update your employer only to the extent necessary.

Cost

The price depends on the centre and the examinations included. Compare the total: tests, dental examination, additional tests and issuance of the document.

Your insurer or mutualista may have its own procedure and benefits. Check before paying privately.

Keep the factura for reimbursement or accounting if applicable.

Confidentiality

An employer generally needs confirmation of fitness or a valid document, not a full diagnosis. Confirm what data is shared.

Do not send test results to a shared work chat. Use a medical channel.

For a doubtful request, ask for its basis and seek advice.

Checklist

Define the purpose, choose an authorised centre, obtain your personal list and preparation instructions. Bring documents, complete the prescribed stages and keep the results.

Check the details and validity period of your Carné de Salud, then set a reminder. This approach makes the medical check a useful preventive measure rather than an urgent formality before the first working day.
