How to make an appointment: at Abitab, Redpagos, Correo Uruguayo or DNIC offices

Service cost as of September 2025: standard renewal 439 pesos; urgent renewal 879 pesos. When the fee is paid online or at payment-collection agencies, a small commission is usually charged.

What is needed to renew a cédula:

1. The previous cédula or a police report of loss/theft. 2. Certificado migratorio para renovar la cédula. This certificate is requested from Migración regardless of where the immigration case is considered or permanent residency was obtained: 2.1. For foreigners with residencia en trámite status, by applying in person without a prior appointment.

2.2. For foreigners with permanent residency (residencia legal status), online through the public-services website, using the Certificado migratorio para renovación de documento de identidad service. On the basis of the online application, the body issuing the certificate sends it electronically to DNIC and notifies the applicant that they may apply to renew the cédula. An online application for the certificate can be submitted 3 calendar months before the cédula’s expiry date.

1. If, when first receiving the cédula at DNIC, a Uruguayan-format birth certificate was not provided, that certificate must be presented for the renewal. It must be issued by Registro Civil no more than 30 days before the cédula renewal date. Read the post about obtaining documents from Registro Civil to learn how to download the certificate online.

1. For married people with a double surname, one of which is their spouse’s, a marriage certificate issued by Registro Civil no more than 30 days before the cédula renewal date is required. If it is not presented, only one surname will appear on the cédula. The new cédula is issued on the day of application. Children under 14 must be accompanied by their legal representative when obtaining a cédula.

Validity period of the second cédula:

1. For foreigners with residencia en trámite status: 1 year.

1. For foreigners holding permanent residency:

2.1. 3 years from the date of issue of the certificado migratorio, provided DNIC has a Uruguayan-format birth certificate.

2.2. 1 year from the date of issue of the certificado migratorio if a Uruguayan-format birth certificate was not provided to DNIC.
