A residency application package in Uruguay depends on citizenship, grounds, marital status, residence history and the place of application. A universal document list is therefore risky: one applicant brings a marriage certificate, another divorce documents, and a third additional certificates from several countries.

The right checklist begins with the chosen residency category and the competent authority’s current instruction. Each item is tied to a specific document, validity period, apostille and translation.

Determine the category and place of application

Before gathering papers, establish which status you are applying for and which body receives the application. Rules for citizens of Mercosur countries, other foreigners, family members and special grounds may differ.

Clarify:

  • the procedure name;
  • the territorial office;
  • the booking method;
  • the permitted immigration status on the application day;
  • originals and electronic files;
  • certificate validity periods;
  • the fee and payment method.

Keep the official page or a dated written reply.

Passport and identity document

The passport must identify the applicant and confirm citizenship. Check validity, integrity and that the name matches other documents. If another travel document is used, confirm acceptance in advance.

Make colour scans of the data page, visas and entry stamps. Do not crop the edges or the number. Bring the original and copies.

If the passport expires soon, consider replacing it before applying. A number change during the process requires a file update.

Birth certificate

A foreign birth record confirms name, date, place and parents. Requirements concerning how recently the copy was issued, apostille and translation are checked separately. An old laminated original may be difficult to legalise.

Order a replacement in advance if details are hard to read or the name changed. Check every letter before the apostille.

An electronic certificate is not automatically accepted: there must be a way to verify its signature and origin.

Marriage, divorce and change of surname

If your current surname differs from your birth surname, collect a continuous chain: marriage, divorce, a name-change decision or other records. One passport does not always explain the change.

A current marriage matters for a family application, but prior records may be needed if they affect the surname. The same principle applies to men and women: the documentary connection must be clear.

Do not apostille every family paper indiscriminately. First determine which ones form part of your package.

Police clearance certificate

The requirement depends on age, citizenship and countries of residence during the stipulated period. Make an address chronology so you do not forget a country of extended stay.

The certificate must be recent and issued for use abroad. Apostille or legalisation and translation must be done in the right order.

If a document cannot be obtained, collect evidence of refusal or the absence of a procedure and request an individual arrangement. You cannot merely state impossibility verbally.

Proof of entry and address

The authority may need information on lawful entry and your current address. Keep the ticket, stamp, immigration record and housing agreement if they relate to the procedure.

The exact way of confirming domicilio depends on the requirement. A utility bill in someone else’s name is not always sufficient. Obtain a document in the accepted form.

If the address is temporary, learn how to report a change. A missed notification can delay the file.

Income and means

The chosen category may require proof of means. Do not use a universal minimum amount based on outdated information. Source, regularity, legality and family composition matter.

Prepare primary documents: a contract, payslips, bank statements, pension documentation, financial statements or business information. Then check whether a local certificate from a notary or accountant is required.

A bank statement shows movement of money, but not always its source. Documents should complement each other.

Medical confirmations

Depending on the procedure, a local health card, vaccination information or separate age-based examinations may be needed. Do not complete every test in advance from someone else’s list.

Confirm the accepted medical institution and validity period. A foreign vaccination certificate may require validation.

Treatment results and a document confirming that an examination was completed are different things. Provide medical data only to the competent authority.

Photograph and biometrics

Some procedures use a photograph or biometrics on site, while others require a photograph prepared in advance in the specified format. Check size, background and quantity before visiting.

Do not edit your face or use an old photograph if requirements limit recency. Glasses, headwear and expression must comply with the instruction.

If the photo is taken in the office, still come appropriately dressed and find out the fee in advance.

Apostille or legalisation

The method for validating a foreign document depends on the issuing country and international agreements. For countries party to the Hague Convention, an apostille is often used; for other countries, consular legalisation applies.

An apostille is issued by the competent authority in the document’s country of origin, not by just any consulate where you live. Check the electronic format and verifiability in Uruguay.

First apostille the original document, then translate it, unless the agency specifies another order.

Translation

Check whether the authority accepts a translation made abroad or requires a traductor público in Uruguay. Different agencies may process the same document differently.

Give the translator every page, apostille, stamp and reverse side. Names must match the passport or have an explanation.

Do not correct a translation by hand. An error is fixed officially.

Document validity periods

Create a table: document, issue date, deadline, apostille, translation and original. Obtain certificates with the shortest validity periods closer to submission.

A long wait for an appointment can make a document expire. Clarify which date is controlling: appointment, submission or review.

Do not order everything again when a visit is postponed until the authority confirms it is necessary.

Paper and electronic copies

Keep a folder of originals, a set of copies and a protected digital archive. Name files clearly: type, person and date. Scans must be legible and full-colour.

Do not give away the only original without a receipt. If a document remains in the file, obtain confirmation.

Check upload format and size in advance. Do not send sensitive papers through a random messenger.

Family application

Create a separate checklist for every adult. The same marriage and address do not mean one set of certificates. A child’s documents are also prepared separately.

Use reference numbers to link the cases and bring proof of relationship. If the family applies on different dates, clarify how documents are added.

Do not assume that approval of the main applicant automatically satisfies the requirements for everyone else.

Final check

One week before the appointment, open the current instruction and go through the package from top to bottom. Check names, dates, apostilles, translations, validity periods and number of copies. Prepare payment and appointment confirmation.

Make a cover sheet with the document list. At the appointment, write down what is missing, in which format and by what date.

A personal package is not the maximum number of certificates, but an exact fit for your category and history. This preparation is more effective at saving months than trying to bring ‘everything in the world’ and hoping an official selects what is needed.
