How can a foreigner open a bank account in Uruguay?

A foreigner can open an account in Uruguay, but the outcome depends on immigration status, citizenship, the bank, the source of funds and the completeness of the documents. Even two branches of the same banking group may organise preliminary checks differently. The right strategy is therefore not to look for a ‘no-questions-asked bank’, but to prepare a transparent financial file in advance.

First, define what the account is for

The bank will ask why you need the account and what transactions you expect. Your answer must match the documents. Receiving a salary, paying rent and covering everyday expenses require one profile. Holding substantial capital or making international transfers calls for a different level of review.

List the expected monthly receipts, currencies, countries of senders and purposes of payments. If you expect a substantial transfer after selling real estate or a business, disclose it before opening the account, not after the money arrives.

Resident and non-resident

Uruguayan residency usually makes it easier to demonstrate a connection with the country, but does not guarantee approval. An account may also be available to non-residents; however, the bank may request more documents, apply a different fee schedule or require a minimum balance.

Ask the bank which status it uses: immigration, tax, or an internal client category. These concepts do not always coincide. Do not call yourself a tax resident merely because you have submitted residency documents.

The basic document package

Usually you prepare a passport, a local document if you have one, proof of address, tax information, contact details and evidence of income or capital. Proof of address may be a lease, a utility bill or another document accepted by the particular bank.

For income, an employment contract, employer certificates, tax returns, account statements, company documents or pension information can be useful. For capital, provide a property-sale agreement, inheritance documents, evidence of dividends and a transaction history. The bank determines the final list itself.

Translation, apostille and validity period

Documents in Russian or another foreign language may require a Spanish translation. Some documents require an apostille or other legalisation. Before ordering an expensive translation, send scans to the bank manager and obtain a written list of requirements.

Check how long certificates remain valid. A document prepared several months before your visit may have to be renewed. Names, addresses and document numbers must match across all papers; it is better to explain discrepancies in advance.

Compliance and citizenship

Banks are required to assess the risk of the client and the transactions. Citizenship, country of tax residence, source of income and transfer route affect the decision. For citizens of countries affected by sanctions or correspondent-bank restrictions, the review may take longer and some transactions may be unavailable.

This does not mean an automatic ban at every bank. But an intermediary’s promise to ‘open an account without checks’ is a warning sign. A lawful route involves disclosing the required information and understanding which transfers the bank can accept after opening.

How to approach a bank

Start with the bank’s official website and request a consultation for a foreign client. Briefly describe your status, the account’s purpose, source of funds and expected transactions. Ask whether a personal visit is required and whether documents can be pre-checked by email.

At the meeting, answer accurately and consistently. Do not conceal a second citizenship, tax residence or a future substantial transfer. After submission the bank may request additional information; this is a normal part of the procedure, not necessarily a refusal.

Personal presence and power of attorney

To open an account, a bank often requires the client to be identified in person. A general power of attorney does not guarantee that someone else can undergo the bank’s checks on the owner’s behalf. If a personal visit is impossible, obtain direct confirmation from the specific bank about an acceptable format.

An intermediary, notary or accountant can help assemble the package and explain local practice, but does not decide for the bank. Do not give third parties passwords, one-time codes or full control of the account.

Fees and minimum balance

Before signing, ask for the fee schedule: account opening, monthly service, card, incoming and outgoing transfers, cash withdrawals, conversion and account closure. Special terms, a deposit or a minimum balance may apply to a non-resident.

Compare not the advertised card price but the annual cost of your scenario. If the account is needed for one international transfer, the correspondent fee and exchange rate may matter more than the monthly charge.

Accounts in pesos and dollars

Many clients use separate subaccounts in Uruguayan pesos and US dollars. Pesos are convenient for local expenses and salaries; dollars are useful for part of the savings and international operations. Ask whether they are opened as one package, what fees apply and whether transfers between them can be made online.

Do not convert a substantial amount without comparing the bank's exchange rate, spread and fees. Sometimes it is more advantageous to receive money in the original currency, but the possibility of that route must be agreed in advance.

Why a bank may refuse

Reasons may include an incomplete package, inability to verify the source of funds, inconsistency between the stated purpose and transactions, correspondent restrictions or internal risk appetite. A bank is not always obliged to explain its decision in detail.

After a refusal, address any actual issues: update documents, prepare translations, simplify the route and apply to another institution. Do not submit mutually contradictory information; it makes the situation worse.

What to check before a substantial transfer

Even an open account does not mean every amount will be accepted automatically. Send the manager a description of the transaction, the underlying agreement, amount, currency, sending bank and expected date. Obtain instructions on the payment reference and correspondent-bank details.

Make a small test transfer if it is economically sensible. Keep SWIFT documents and correspondence. Do not split payments to evade review: that practice can itself trigger additional questions.

A practical sequence of steps

First choose two or three banks, then send each the same brief description of your situation. Assemble the basic documents, obtain an individual list of requirements, order only the necessary translations and schedule a personal meeting. After approval, activate online banking, check limits and make a test transaction.

Before visiting, check terms on the official websites of BROU and private banks. For a complex income structure, engage an independent Uruguayan contador or escribano. A well-prepared package does not guarantee an account, but it shortens processing time and reduces the risk of costly repeat translations and trips.
