In Uruguay, if you need to send a parcel between cities, forget the word ‘post’ (Correo). In this context, a parcel is called an encomienda. This is the key concept. It is not a postal service as commonly understood, but a delivery system often tied to bus routes or specialist private logistics companies.
1. Two main ways to send a parcel between cities in Uruguay
1. Official: transport and logistics companies (Empresas de Transporte/Logística)
This is the most reliable and popular option.
- How it works: go to the company’s office in your city, hand in the parcel, complete the paperwork, pay (or specify that the recipient pays), and receive a receipt with a tracking number.
- Where the offices are: in Montevideo, most such companies have offices at or very near the Tres Cruces bus terminal. In other cities, they may have a branch inside the terminal or a separate agency.
- Examples: DAC (the largest), UES, Mirtrans and Correo Uruguayo.
2. Informal: with a bus driver (Enviar con chofer)
Important: this option is disappearing and is officially prohibited by most major bus companies — COT, Copsa, Agencia Central and others — for safety and insurance reasons. Trying to hand a parcel directly to a driver at Tres Cruces in Montevideo will almost certainly be refused.
- How it works: go to the departure point of the required bus, find the driver, agree an arrangement and pay cash directly. The recipient must wait for the bus at the destination terminal.
- Where it may still work: in small, remote towns and villages without transport-company offices, with passing local buses. It is always a risk undertaken at your own responsibility; companies accept no liability.
2. Overview of the main transport companies
Here is a detailed guide to the services you will use most often.
DAC (Distribuidora de Agencias Central)
This is the broadest and most popular domestic-delivery network — Uruguay’s ‘DHL’. In essence, it is the logistics division of the bus giant Agencia Central.
- Collection and delivery points: agencies throughout the country, including in small towns.
- Delivery options:
- Agencia-to-Agencia: the standard service. You hand in the parcel at one agency and the recipient collects it at another. This is the cheapest option.
- Agencia-to-Domicilio: door-to-door delivery is available for an additional charge.
- Payment:
- Prepago: the sender pays when handing it in.
- Collect: the recipient pays on collection; it is slightly more expensive. A good option for selling goods through Facebook Marketplace.
- Tracking: yes, on the DAC website or through its WhatsApp bot. It works reliably.
- Speed: usually 24–48 hours, excluding weekends.
UES (Uruguay Express Service)
A strong private logistics company distinguished by its modern system and close partnership with Mercado Libre.
- Collection and delivery points: company offices plus an extensive network of partner PickUp centres, which may be in pharmacies, grocery shops or shopping centres.
- Delivery: similar to DAC — PickUp-to-PickUp or PickUp-to-Door.
- Payment: most often the sender pays, especially for Mercado Libre purchases where delivery is already included.
- Tracking: yes; its online tracking is very good and detailed.
Mirtrans
Another major provider, largely similar to UES, and also widely used by Mercado Libre. Its rates are very competitive.
- Collection and delivery points: offices and PickUp points.
- Delivery: PickUp-to-PickUp or PickUp-to-Door.
- Payment: as with UES.
- Tracking: yes, with good online tracking.
Useful Spanish phrases
These phrases will help you arrange a shipment quickly, even if you have only just begun to learn the language:
- Quiero enviar una encomienda a (city name). I want to send a parcel to…
- Retiro en agencia. The recipient will collect it at an agency.
- Envío a domicilio. Door-to-door delivery.
- Pago en origen. I will pay now (prepayment).
- Pago en destino or Collect. The recipient will pay.
- ¿Cuál es el número de rastreo? What is the tracking number?
How to arrange home courier collection
If you do not have time to go to Tres Cruces or the parcel is heavy, you can arrange a courier collection.
- At DAC this is called Retiro. You can request it on the official website under Solicitar Retiro or through its WhatsApp bot.
- The courier comes to your address, weighs the parcel and issues a receipt. It costs a little more, but makes life much easier if you work from home.
How to calculate the cost
In Uruguay, delivery pricing depends not only on weight but also on volume.
- For small boxes, the standard price is usually around 200–300 pesos.
- If you send a bulky item, such as filming equipment or furniture, the cost will be higher.
- Always round the weight upwards for an approximate calculation. Companies use specialised scales and measuring tapes.
Where to track a parcel
Rather than refreshing a site constantly, use direct links to the tracking systems:
- For DAC: go to dac.com.uy and enter the number in the Rastreo field.
- For UES: use its website or app. It has the most prompt notification system.
- For Mercado Libre purchases: the status appears directly in your order details in the app.
A safety tip
Always photograph the receipt as soon as you send the parcel. In Uruguay, receipts are printed on thermal paper that fades quickly in sunlight. If a parcel is delayed and the text becomes illegible, it will be difficult to prove that it was sent.
3. Useful tips and nuances
- Tres Cruces is the hub. In Montevideo, if you do not know where a DAC or other bus-company office is, go straight to the Tres Cruces terminal. It has their counters or offices, or terminal staff can point them out.
- Mercado Libre. If you buy something through Mercado Libre, you will most likely use its own delivery system, often carried out through UES or Mirtrans. It is simple and convenient because everything is integrated into the purchase process.
- Essential: Cédula de Identidad. To send, and especially to collect, a parcel, you always need a Cédula de Identidad (Uruguayan ID) or passport. A parcel will not be released without identification.
- Packaging. Companies are not responsible for contents if they are poorly packed. Arrive at the agency with a well-sealed parcel. Some offices sell boxes or wrap, but it is better to bring your own.
- Weight and volume. Heavy or very bulky freight, such as furniture, has a substantially higher tariff, and some companies, including UES, may impose weight limits for PickUp points.
