Punta del Este translates from Spanish as “eastern point” or “eastern cape”. The name is associated with the geographical position of the peninsula in eastern Uruguay and its extension into the water. The city grew up around this notable coastal point.
The peninsula separates two contrasting shores: Playa Mansa faces the more sheltered side of the Río de la Plata, while Playa Brava faces the ocean, where waves and winds are usually stronger. This contrast helps explain both the geography and the city's tourist layout.
For a first visit, it is easy to walk across the peninsula from one side to the other, via the port, central streets and the lighthouse. Distances are moderate, but the weather changes quickly, so take a windbreaker and sunscreen even for a short walk.
