Uruguay has its own mix of history, architecture, social institutions and everyday rhythm, but it is incorrect to contrast it with the rest of Latin America. The region is extremely diverse, and similarities to Argentina, southern Brazil and other neighbors are noticeable in language, food, music and urban culture.
European influence in Montevideo does not make the country “non-Latin American.” Uruguayan identity includes mate, candombe, murga, fútbol, coastal culture and local historical memory. Outside the capital, the impression also changes from department to department.
It is better to compare specific parameters: safety, pace of work, cost of living, transport and attitude to the rules. The country’s uniqueness then becomes a practical observation rather than a stereotype about the whole continent.
