Clothing in Uruguay is considered expensive, and not everyone finds the price-to-quality ratio satisfactory. Some Argentine-made goods may be perceived as low quality, so a high price does not always mean a good purchase.
One reason is the small market and dependence on imports. Choice is more limited than in larger countries, and familiar brands or specialised items can cost considerably more. This is particularly relevant for footwear, basic clothing and children’s goods.
Before moving, bring items you know you need and that fit well: comfortable shoes, a basic wardrobe, seasonal clothes and specialised items. You need not bring everything, but should not expect a cheap wardrobe refresh in Uruguay.
