Temporary accommodation after moving gives you time to choose a neighborhood and prepare documents for a long-term rental. The optimal length is one that gives the family time to recover, attend initial appointments, and view apartments without rushing. A booking that is too short can force you to settle for the first option, while one that is too long locks you into a high nightly rate.
Airbnb, aparthotels, B&Bs, and direct rentals serve different purposes. Compare them by total cost, the option to extend, workspace, kitchen, and cancellation rules.
How long should you book for
A week may suit a tourist trip but is rarely enough for a move. In that time, it is difficult to get to know the neighborhoods and sign a long-term lease with a rental guarantee. A month provides more flexibility and can sometimes reduce the nightly rate.
For a family, a pet, or high season, an additional buffer is sensible. Check whether you can extend your stay: a popular apartment may already be booked by the next guest.
Do not pay for six months of temporary accommodation before exploring the area. It is better to combine a reliable first month with a flexible plan.
Airbnb and other platforms
The platform is convenient because of its reviews, payment process, and dispute procedure. Read recent reviews about noise, heating, internet, cleanliness, and the host. A high overall score can hide a problem that is critical for you.
Do not transfer payment outside the platform for a discount before check-in. You will lose protection and confirmation of the terms. Communicate in the platform's chat.
Check the total cost, including service and cleaning fees. A low nightly rate can become high after additional fees.
Aparthotel
An aparthotel combines hotel service with a kitchen and longer stays. It is convenient if you need cleaning, a front desk, luggage storage, and a clear factura. The price is usually higher than for a direct rental.
Clarify the size of the kitchen, refrigerator, laundry facilities, heating, and desk. The word “apartment” does not guarantee a fully equipped apartment.
For a month's stay, request a special rate and early departure terms. Compare it with platform listings with the same services included.
B&B and guesthouses
A small property can offer a personal touch and help with the neighborhood. But a shared kitchen, guest rules, and limited privacy are not for everyone.
Ask whether breakfast is included every day, whether there are cooking facilities, and where to store your belongings. For remote work, check for quiet and a separate workspace.
Reviews of the host are important, but document long-term arrangements in writing.
What should be included
Temporary rentals often include furniture, internet, water, and some utility costs. Electricity or heating may be subject to a limit. Clarify before payment:
- final price;
- utilities and limits;
- cleaning and linen changes;
- deposit;
- parking;
- internet;
- rules of guests and pets;
- late arrival;
- cancellation and extension.
Photograph the meters when you move in if usage is charged separately.
Internet for work
The phrase “fast Wi-Fi” is not a measurement. Ask for a test result from the apartment or clarify the type of connection. Check the speed on the first day.
Find out where the router is located and whether there is a desk. A beautiful chair by the kitchen is not suitable for eight hours of work.
Keep a mobile connection as a backup. If the connection is critical, choose a property with reviews from remote workers.
Seasonality
On the coast, prices and availability change dramatically in summer. A winter monthly rate does not guarantee an extension into January. In Montevideo, seasonality is less pronounced, but holidays and events also have an impact.
Check the dates rather than relying on the general phrase “the season is over.” The owner may define the season differently. Ask for the price for each month.
If your move falls during a period of high demand, book early and expand your search area. Do not expect a discount at the last minute.
Discounts for monthly stays and prepayment
The monthly rate may be lower than the sum of individual nights. The discount is justified if the accommodation has been checked and the cancellation terms are acceptable. Making a large payment directly in advance to an unfamiliar owner raises the risk.
Get a contract or platform confirmation with the address, dates, amount, and refund terms. Verify the recipient's identity and their right to rent out the property.
Don’t pay with cryptocurrency or cash without a trace just for the promise of a “best price.”
Inspection before a long stay
If possible, book a few days first, then extend the booking. Check noise at night, hot water, humidity, the mattress, the kitchen, and entrance security.
Photograph any damage at check-in and send the photos to the owner. Clarify who handles breakdowns and how long repairs take.
In the home, check the heating and air conditioning by turning them on.
Pets and children
Permission to bring a pet must be stated in the booking. Check the additional fee, yard, elevator, and cleaning rules. Do not conceal the pet.
For a child, check the windows, balcony, stairs, heaters and bed. Photographs rarely reveal dangerous details.
For a family, laundry facilities and a nearby grocery store matter. These everyday features are more valuable than a tourist view.
Use of a temporary address
Not every property permits the address to be used for official procedures, receiving mail, or proving residence. Ask the owner in advance, and do not tell an authority anything that has not been confirmed.
For deliveries, provide the correct entrance, apartment number, and phone number. Valuable documents are best received through a trackable delivery service.
If the address has changed during the procedure, inform the competent authority.
Safe booking
Check reviews, the profile, the map pin, and photos. Too low a price, pressure to pay urgently, and refusal to show the exact address are red flags.
Save the listing and the rules. Pay by a method that provides proof of the transaction. Do not send a full passport scan without a clear reason and a secure channel.
For a direct rental, use a written agreement and verify the owner.
Transition to a long-term rental
Temporary accommodation should support the search. Set aside days for viewings, prepare rental guarantee documents, and compare neighborhoods. Do not fill the entire month with administrative appointments.
Ten to fourteen days before it ends, decide whether to extend or move. Do not wait until the last night, when your options and bargaining position are worse.
A good temporary rental is not just the cheapest bed. It is a secure base with internet, a kitchen, and a sufficient length of stay, from which you can calmly choose a permanent home and avoid overpaying because of a rushed decision.
