Schools in Uruguay: Public and Private Options, Costs, and Child Adaptation

Choosing a school in Uruguay is not just about comparing the public and private systems. It is important to consider a specific school, schedule, language, commute, class size, support for a foreign child and the full budget. An expensive school does not guarantee a suitable atmosphere, and a single negative review does not describe the entire public system.

First, identify your child’s needs, then visit several schools and compare them according to the same criteria.

Educational levels

The education system includes preschool, primary and subsequent levels. Age and completed grade determine the appropriate pathway. Revalidation of a foreign transcript may be required.

Clarify the official name of the level and the programme. The literal translation of “secondary school” can sometimes be confusing.

Plan transitions in advance: the primary school you choose may not offer upper grades.

Public school

Public education is funded by the system, but families still bear the costs of materials, clothing, transportation and additional classes. The availability of places and schedules depends on the area.

Visit the school and ask about class size, meals, communication, devices and language support. Do not judge the school by the appearance of the building.

Meals

Some public schools provide meals, but the format and coverage vary. Ask for the menu, schedule and information on allergy accommodations.

Do not rely on meals until the school confirms them. Prepare a safe snack for the first few days.

Devices and materials

Paper materials and stationery also depend on the teacher and class.

Private school

Private institutions vary in programme, size and religious or pedagogical orientation. Ask for the curriculum, accreditation and statistics on further education.

The price does not include everything. Additional charges may apply for matrícula, meals, transport, uniforms, equipment, trips and extracurricular activities.

Bilingual programme

The word “bilingual” can mean a few English lessons or that a significant portion of subjects are taught in English. Ask about the number of hours, teachers’ qualifications and the expected outcome.

Certification for an international programme and a marketing label are different things.

IB and international programmes

If the school claims to offer IB or another international system, clarify the specific programme level and its authorization. Not every level at the institution participates in the programme.

Evaluate the workload, language, recognition and the child’s plans. An international programme is useful for future moves, but it is not required for a quality education.

Ask to speak with the coordinator, not only with the admissions office.

Schedule

Half-day, full-day and after-school care arrangements create different family logistics. Clarify arrival and departure times, early-release days, holidays and days without classes.

Compare this with parents’ work schedules and transport. A nearby school may be more convenient than a highly rated school across the city.

Check who will pick up the child and how authorized persons are registered.

Academic level

Do not use the number of homework assignments as the only indicator. Study the programme, feedback, how the school accommodates different learning paces and graduate outcomes.

Ask specific questions: how are reading and mathematics assessed, what is done when there is a knowledge gap, and how is progress reported? Ask for an example schedule.

The subjective claim that “it is weaker here” requires comparing the same age groups and goals.

Spanish for a foreigner

The school must understand that adjusting to a new language is not the same as intellectual delay. Find out whether there are additional classes and assessment adjustments.

At home, maintain the child’s native language and gradually develop academic Spanish. Do not expect them to speak without an accent immediately.

The teacher must distinguish between a language error and a lack of understanding of the subject matter.

Creativity and sports

Clubs help with socialization, especially when the child’s speech is still limited. Compare what is included in the schedule with what is paid for separately.

Check the facilities, safety and qualifications. A long list of clubs does not mean that each is available to the appropriate age group.

Do not overload your child in the first few months. One stable activity is enough.

Psychologists and specialists

Find out whether there is a psychologist, support teacher and a procedure for seeking help. Confidentiality and how parents are informed should be clear.

If your child needs a speech therapist or learning specialist, check the language and cost. School support may not replace external therapy.

Provide only medical information relevant to education.

A single conflict and systematic bullying require different responses. Find out about the school’s protocol, those responsible and the timelines. Record facts, messages and changes in behaviour.

Do not publicly blame a child or family without an investigation. Seek a safety and monitoring plan.

If the school ignores a recurring risk, escalate the matter according to the established procedure.

Cost of a private school

Old figures quickly become outdated. Request a written annual calculation for a specific grade: entrance fee, number of monthly payments, indexation, meals, transportation, uniforms, materials and activities.

Ask about sibling discounts and scholarship terms, but do not include a scholarship in the budget until it is approved.

How to visit a school

Prepare a list of questions and visit during a regular school day, if permitted. Look at the classrooms, yard and bathrooms, and observe adults’ interactions with children.

Let your child get acquainted with the school and listen to their impressions, but do not leave the final decision entirely to them.
