Medicines in Uruguay: Prescriptions, Pharmacy Discounts and Medication Supplies When Moving

The same active ingredient may be sold in Uruguay under another name, in another dosage, or only on prescription. That is why the search for a medicine starts not with the brand, but with the international nonproprietary name, form and the doctor's instructions.

Moving requires a lawful supply for the transition period and a plan to continue treatment through the local health system. A large suitcase of tablets without documents creates a risk at the border and does not address future prescriptions.

Why the range differs

National registration, suppliers and clinical practice determine which medicines are available. The absence of a familiar brand does not mean the active ingredient is absent.

Packaging, concentration and excipients may differ. Do not substitute a medicine solely because of a similar name.

Check availability in the registry and at pharmacies as of the current date. A temporary shortage is not the same as complete absence in the country.

Prepare a list

Ask for the international nonproprietary name and exact dose. Keep the receipt and return terms: medicines are often not accepted back after sale.
